In Character Information
Name: His fanon name is "Yami Yuugi", however, in series he is usually referred to as "Yuugi" or "the other Yuugi". If Yuugi actually showed up, he'd probably choose a different name for himself. His real name is Atem, though he isn't aware of it yet.
Series: Yuugiou
Canon Standing: Battle City, Alcatraz Duel Tower Finals; during the final duel with Marik.
Age: Thousands of years old; at least 3,000. Physically he's 15 years old and, since he's a spirit, does not age.
Birthday & Astrology Sign: April 2nd | Aries
Arcana: Emperor
Personality:
When Yuugi finished assembling the Millennium Puzzle and awakened the spirit of the pharaoh, everyone -- even Yuugi himself -- believed that he had somehow developed an alternate personality. Yami Yuugi was everything that he wasn't; where Yuugi was easily pushed around bullied, Yami Yuugi stood up to those that would beat him down, and often returned what people would dish out at him tenfold, to the point of being almost exceptionally cruel. Eventually Yuugi came to depend on this "other personality," even though he could never remember what happened while it was in control. It wasn't until Death-T that Yami Yuugi really defined himself as a separate entity, the punishment he forced on Kaiba being his first real act of kindness, even though it didn't seem that way at first.
As Yami Yuugi began to emerge more and more as a separate individual, his various traits came out more and more. At first, he remained the complete opposite of Yuugi, a strong presence that would always make itself known whenever Yuugi or his friends were in danger. However, as time moved on, it became obvious that not only was Yami Yuugi influencing Yuugi, but Yuugi was doing the same to him. Through sharing the same body, the two of them learned each others strengths and weaknesses, and came to take on the best of both. While Yuugi remained the unassuming one and Yami Yuugi the one that always stood like a rock, there was very little difference between the two of them in the end.
Yami Yuugi is a complicated character -- in fact, the room of his soul is a twisted maze, akin to an Escher painting -- but first and foremost he is a natural born leader and a master strategist, and he knows it and isn't afraid to let others know it either. His confidence can border on arrogance sometimes, but it usually isn't without reason. His ego really seems to emerge when he has an opponent cornered with no way to to escape. Sometimes this is true and he achieves victory, though unlike most others in the series, he doesn't usually rub his opponent's face in it, instead explaining to them why they lost (and not just always using the excuse of them being dumb enough to challenge him). However, despite being a spirit, he is still human and can occasionally be wrong; however he does not give up easily, and will pursue victory no matter how bleak a situation. This can be excessive at times, as he was willing to beat Kaiba in a duel even though he was threatening to kill himself if he lost. Yuugi stopping him at that moment made him realize how bad this was, and he tries not to be that "trigger happy" anymore. The only time Yami Yuugi himself had been brought close to giving up, was when Jounouchi had been severely injured in his own duel against Marik, to the point where for all intents and purposes he was dead. As both of them are very close to Jounouchi, the devastation they both felt nearly crippled Yami Yuugi, to the point where even his hatred for Marik didn't even seem like a good excuse to keep going. It took a vision of the future, of Jounouchi still alive, for him to find the strength to go on.
Though Yami Yuugi is rarely the one in control of Yuugi's body outside of dueling, he has been shown to be rather casual and easy going, especially around his friends. As mentioned, he is a natural born leader, and this extends to leading his group of friends as well. However, while he is a strong and commanding presence amongst them, he doesn't force respect from others, and instead earns it through his actions. His strong will and courage are a positive influence on Yuugi and his friends, and their whole group noticeably grows through out the series. Despite this, he is still a teenager and, although very rare, he is still capable of moments of awkwardness that make him look like a complete and utter dork.
Due to the fact that he usually only reveals himself during a duel, Yami Yuugi can be a little lacking socially, despite his strong leadership skills. In many cases, it seems like he only lives for a duel, as even in situations where there is no chance of a duel taking place, he would probably end up talking about it at some point (though this is only encouraged by the fact that the majority of his friends are dueling enthusiasts as well). Also, Yami Yuugi seems to be girl dumb as well; while he easily picks up on the fact that Yuugi is fond of Anzu, he seems to completely miss that Anzu is much more interested in him than Yuugi.
Yami Yuugi is coming into the game at a desperate time for him and his group. He was right in the middle of a duel that not only risked his life and whether or not he would be able to get his memories back, but also risked the life of his partner, their friends, and maybe even the whole world. He's going to be exceptionally on edge and jittery at first, and more than likely unable to settle down for quite some time. Also, although the events in the anime filler DOMA arc are not canon to the manga, it is still a good reference to show how Yami Yuugi is without Yuugi present, something that is only glimpsed briefly in the manga during his final duel with Pegasus. In short: he doesn't take it well. He's come to depend on Yuugi, both as his host and as a good friend that he feels he needs to protect no matter what. Losing him is akin to losing an arm, and he would put the blame entirely on himself for not being strong enough to save him, even if it wasn't really his fault. It would take him some time to get himself together after being separated; once he finally does, he'd stop at nothing to get him back again.
Backstory:
They play a children's card game to save the world.
NOTE: Although I'm keeping to the original Japanese version of Yuugiou, I'm using "Shadows" instead of "Darkness" here. In Yuugiou, Darkness is used as reference to the two sides a person can have: a side that's shown to the world, and a side that is hidden, much like the Persona universe.
Canon Powers:
Yami Yuugi's powers are entirely dependent on the Millennium Puzzle, but it's a bit difficult to state what those powers are because for the most part, he doesn't use them. When he first appeared in the series, he was highly unstable mentally -- no doubt because of being trapped in darkness next to the greatest evil ever for more than three thousand years -- and had no issues with inflicting excessively brutal punishment games on those that dared to mess with his host, even setting someone on fire without blinking an eye. It took some time being a part of Yuugi before he was able to calm down, and hasn't used his abilities since Mind Crushing Kaiba, putting him in a coma as he forced him to piece his true heart back together.
Can he use the power of the Millennium Puzzle to the point of the same abuse as other Millennium Item users in the series? Most likely, but the fact that he doesn't sets him apart from them.
More importantly? Best. Damn. Card player. Ever. Period. The only person that was ever able to beat Yami Yuugi was Kaiba, and the only reason he won was because Kaiba threatened to throw himself off a building if he lost. Even still, Yami Yuugi would have had no issues at all winning, but Yuugi held him back. He is a master strategist and master game player, and has shown that his skills extend to more than just card games, and he can pick up on the rules of any game with only a few minutes of playing (and win with seemingly little effort).
As a spirit, Yami Yuugi owes his very existence to his host, Yuugi, and to the Millennium Puzzle, the container of his soul and lost memories. He can probably be separated from the Puzzle, but only for a short distance; as in, if someone snatched the Puzzle and tried to run off with it, he'd probably be able to stand there for a few feet, before the "forces that be" that tie him to the Puzzle end up dragging him along. If the Puzzle were ever disassembled, it would essentially be another form of character death for him; he can't exist without the Puzzle being completed.
The Millennium Items as a whole are items of power brought about by Dark Alchemy, capable of drawing creatures out of the Shadows. The only reason Yami Yuugi is able to exist separately right now is because a Shadow Game brought about by Marik's Millennium Rod made it so. Considering Persona, this could be detrimental, and make him more susceptible to manipulation by Shadows.

Yuugi was gone.
It was a difficult thing for his brain to process. He and Yuugi were always together, always one and the same; the only time they had been apart was when Pegasus had forced Yuugi to overtax his spirit in a Shadow Game, and even then he returned once the game was over. They had never been separated, not like this...
Yami Yuugi pressed his back up against a wall to keep his balance, gritting his teeth. It wouldn't stop... first Marik nearly (or at least, he hoped nearly) killed Mai and Jounouchi, and now he was brought to this place, said to be needed for an important task, and completely separated from his precious partner at such a crucial time. He paused, staring down at the LP counter on his Duel Disk, still lit up and showing the amount of Life Points he had left before the duel for his memories was interrupted. Was this his fault, somehow? Had that butterfly-masked creature summoned him here, just because of his drive to regain his memories? Was not supposed to know them; would it be better if he stopped...?
After a moment, he forced himself to take a deep breath, thumping his head against the wall as if it would help. No, now was not the time to think like this. Right now, as much as he wanted -- no, needed -- to track Yuugi down and see if that masked person had brought him here too, he had to see to his own welfare right now. Once he knew where he was and what was around him, then he would be able to hunt his partner down. That... that was what Yuugi would do if he were in this situation, right...?
"Wait for me, partner. I'll find you as soon as I can," he murmured, before pushing himself off the wall, heading out to the street to find someone that could give him some answers.
